Back to the OPs example, because of the presence of a cyclist, I would not smooth the corner even with perfect visability.

I should clarify that I experience this mostly when driving, rather than on the bike. And it normally involves idiots who are already "smoothing the corner" before they come into my view (or I into theirs, come to that).

Smoothing the corner is a tactic many a driver ends up doing when the corner more sharp than expected.

In that situation there could be far more danger to a cyclist if the driver did not smooth.
