I have some wheels which had a 9 speed cassette on, when I put on a 10 speed the lockring wouldnttighten but when I removed the spacer all was good,,,,,,,, somy question is would thst be ok without a spacer?

I can never remember these things off hand but i think it is normally the 10 speed that needs a spacer rather than the 9 speed . Is it a new spacer you are trying it with? It might be that it is a 1.85mm spacer (which it would need on a 11 speed hub) rather than a 1mm.

Someone with more knowledge who can actually help will be along shortly!

As long as the lockring is tight and the cassette is snug with no play, then you'll be ok. Your original problem suggests that the cassette was sticking out too far, stopping the lockring catching on the threads, so removing the spacer was correct.
