If the kid was 3 years old I would understand it. A 9 year old who had been "heartbroken" just a year before by the same thing should know a lot better.

Perhaps because she thought the charity would not give her yet another free bike unless she went to the press again.
It's hardly like locked bikes don't get stolen. Likewise locked properties, cars etc. Not all thieves are merely opportunistic.

We're talking about a kid leaving his bike in the garden while he goes for a piss. If he'd left it overnight or something I could understand the argument that he wasn't taking adequate care - but he didn't. He left it for a few minutes. Surely we should all expect to be able to do that?

He's 9 years old. A year is a lifetime to a 9 year old.
And everything is free when you are 9 years old.
I'm glad he wasn't totally hardened by his first theft. I bet he is now
