While the police car was in the ASL, I personally would not have filtered past them, instead I would have taken a primary position behind the car and moved into secondary (if it was safe to do so) once I had successfully navigated the junction.

Cyclist was a bit of a nob so was the copper, meh I am not getting a helmet cam if this is what happens to you.
You'll probably find they normally act like this but the camera/YouTube let's everyone else see it.

No no no, have you not been paying attention lately? Attaching a camera turns meek, polite and courteous cyclists into raging idignant oafs who love putting their lives in danger for meaningless youtube hits. And that's the only reason they get the cameras. It's up to the so brave posters on this forum to 'enlighten' them.

The cyclist was probably making a point as the police driver clearly "jumped the lights" into the ASL. Frankly, I wouldn't bother, but the reaction from the police driver was the typical car driver one - confrontational with a stunning lack of knowledge of the highway code. What makes me rather despair is that I would hope for better road craft from the organisation charged with policing said roads. I see some superb driving from police drivers, but I also see far too much really poor - and illegal - driving as well. If they practice breaking road laws then I think it is a valid criticism to wonder how on earth they view policing these laws. As an example I was walking my daughter back from school on a very busy road full of children at 3:30pm to hear a van driving fast and bumping hard over the speed bumps. It was a police van wildly exceeding the 20mph limit and then shooting down a side turning where young children were waiting to cross. He had no sirens or lights on so was bound by normal traffic rules. I have videos of police cars jumping lights, invading ASLs and generally being as obnoxious as some of the drivers we encounter. Holding the police to a higher road craft standard than your average poor driver isn't asking for too much.

Newcastle City Centre is very mixed bag for cycling. Heading north you have to circle around that ultra ultra wide pedestrians only Northumberland Street , hit 4 or so red lights and thus add about 5 minutes on any trip.

The ASL has a feeder lane on the left hand side. So "technically" the cyclist was correct in using it to enter the ASL.
However I wouldn't use it - way too narrow and dangerous!
