Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix. He hasn't won them (yet).
Will he want to retire without having ticked them off?

Especially MSR - he seems to have a bee in his bonnet about that.

Milan is close to home and he'll arguably not be the best Slovenian to ride it if he never wins it!

Whereas if Pog never wins the northern cobbled monument, it'll be less in his face, plus he came pretty close on the first attempt so maybe he doesn't feel it's as difficult a puzzle to crack.

Similar to the TdF stage record at the moment: if it comes in range, he'll take it, but he's neither trying for it nor troubled by it yet, but he's ridden no classic as much as MSR without a win.

I believe a cyclist peaks at 26/27 yrs old, so Pog is at that stage. But another 4 years and Pog will be on the decline. Somebody like Oscar Onley, currently 22 and almost stayed with pog on one of the stages, will in turn reach a peak in four years time.

Whatever, there are going to be some exciting racing to come.

Neither Hinault or Merckx had won a Grand Tour before they were 24. Indurain won his first at 27. Lemond won his first Tour at 25. I'd say it's only very recently that riders of Onley's age were in any way competitive. For most of cycling's history 22 year olds wouldn't be, and the peak was regarded as late 20s, early 30s.

Yep, different worlds back then

Wait till he gets married , has a couple of kids and discovers he needs a beer to cope at the end of the day

Joking aside who knows what the future holds and how many years he will have the passion to keep riding .

I could have beaten pog pre kids don't you know!🤣🤣🤣

my original post about his passion to keep riding is almost written in hindsight as there are rumours hes bored , had enough of racing and might retire in 2028 if i remember rightly .

Probably less the racing than the monastic lifestyle required by it.

My hot take is that he will focus on his explosive power over the Winter, at the expense of the long mountain climbing efforts needed to win the Tour. Then he at least has a chance of dropping MVDP on the Poggio and the Carrefour de l'Arbre

It's probably taboo to mention this, but I reckon Urska plays a big role. I think they're both very fortunate* in having a partner in the PERFECT situation to support/encourage their own career. That could change in a big way - better or worse - for either of them.

*And I for one am very pleased for them both!
