I bought myself a Canon 1100D for Christmas along with a 50mm 1.2 Prime, 18-55mm and 70-300mm

Here are some of the shots i've been taking since Jan 1st... full manual, always. Don't see the point in buying a camera and using the presets!

After a few smaller cameras (110 film?) I started on a Canon T80 which my mother bought for herself and found too complicated. That was just before my little sister was born (I would have been 14yrs old)... My mother gave it to me for my 21st birthday...
When that failed had been repaired twice and the camera shop refused to repair it again, my OH bought me a box... family history and from being the eldest meant that I generally took a quick look at the outside of a present, and put it safely to one side and waited for the little'uns to destroy the sitting room before retreating with anything important still in tact to open quietly at some other point in time (youngest being 17 years younger than me).... the box contained a new Canon EOS 50N with 2 kit lenses... we could not afford it but he knew I was heart-broken that my old camera had failed and at the time I was running the photographic society at uni (PhD student) and doing the sports photos for various teams...
When that died (found a lake via 2 kids on bikes (!) whilst photoing some fireworks at night), I upgraded to a Canon EOS 350D - already had the lenses (at least those that did not end up in the water) I needed so stayed Canon...
bought some decent lenses some years later and upgraded to a Canon EOS 40D and added in some Lee filters...

then decided to go off and cycle around the world... so bought a Canon Powershot G11, to be replced by the G12 after I picked up a scratch on the lens and also sold all my other kit (all my camera kit except for the Lee filters) to fund the purchase of a Canon EOS 5D mkii to also cycle around the world with... No further plans to upgrade - love the camera and takes some fantastic pictures (5D mkii with EF 24-105mm L series lens & 70-200mm F/4.0 L series lens) and lee filters are worth every penny... and when its overkill the Powershot G12 comes out to play...

I once had an Olympus Trip but it got stolen from my tent at Glastonbury Festival, 1982, along with a whole load of beer
I had been developing an interest in photography at that point, but I couldn't afford to replace it back then, and my interest sort of dwindled.
These days I'm happy with my mobile phone camera

Can you still develop an interest in photography in the digital age?

My 1st "real" camera was a Russian Fed (similar to the Zorky-copy of a Leica). I then moved to the Russian Zenith which was good for the basic price.
When I went into weddings/portraits etc. I had a Minolta 7000i with computerised flash......very advanced for it's time (and very expensive:eek: ).
I now use a Canon 7D which I got as its quick focus amkes it good for birds in flight which I enjoy.
Russian copies weren't that bad after all. I've had a few Russian cameras like Zorki, ZED and MIR and with good Ferrania film they actually produce some wonderful photos. They must have had hundreds of cameras back then.

Sure, but choose your equipment wisely. There are many systems out there but only a few of those will be for a long time. Nikon F and Canon EF are the most likely to be carrying on, as Sony and Fuji are already planning on a new one. I partially agree with SatNavSaysStraightOn, you could shoot JPGs but the results would not be that stunning.

I bought one of these last year. Unfortunately, the only camera store in town which stocked the film has just closed down..

Thank you for starting this thread, it made me dig out the best camera I ever owned, a Canon AE-1. I have also just discovered that it is a historically significant SLR, in that it was the first one to be controlled by a microprocessor, how about that!
It really did take some amazing photos, would love to use it again. Is this still possible? Does anyone still sell / develop film?

AE-1, a great great camera. Ask your local camera store, if they don't have film or a developing service they sure know someone who does. A roll of 35mm film starts at £2 and developing at £4 per roll (C41).

Many thanks, with all the snow we have had here recently I have wanted to get some good quality photos, I have posted up a few in the photography thread, they are ok but more for the composition than quality and you can't play around with the depth of field with these modern digital compacts. Taking a picture with the Canon was a real joy that required some thought which I now believe has been lost to some extent with digital cameras.
