Just had a busy few days at work and home.

The money raised will be put towards server rental and software.

The forum software has an annual license renewal and the server rental currently runs at £1920 per year (£160 per month).

This may seem expensive to many people, however this is a completely dedicated business-class server with a massive bandwidth allowance. The support and infrastructure of the hosting company is also first class (a godsend when the smelly stuff hits the fan.). The server itself also has some extra's for speed and backup cover.

Whilst there aren't any direct expenses for CC, anything that has come up has been covered by the business.

Now in the past 8 months there's been less revenue coming in to the business, so as it has supported CC, it made sense to ask for some help towards the server running costs until things pick back up.

The £1200 will be used to supplement the server cost during the low income periods, and I'm hopeful that the business will pick up again as the economic situation changes and that we won't need to do another funding drive anytime soon.

Now whether we look at making CC financially independent of the business in the longer term is a matter for discussion; so long as we build on what we've got, and don't spoil it!

So far over £820 has been raised (thanks everyone) and if you do chose to donate, you now have an idea of where it will go ...

Cheers,
Shaun

Yeah, sorry, I suppose it helps having some perspective when you're considering a donation.

I always intended to keep it completely free and never imagined having to consider funding / costs, so it's been a bit of a nervous and embarrasing time for me raising the whole subject.

Equally it has been quite interesting because I have been reminded of just how much people get out of CC, and how the whole community spirit we've fostered here over the last couple of year gives people a feeling of having a real stake in it.

The CC membership continue to amaze me - there are some true characters here, and some very generous souls too.

Cheers,
Shaun

Ads - I'm happy to contribute/givUafewbob...

Makes it more personal...

Though, how do I claim it on the expenses xx(

Nah seriously, very intersting.

I can feel a poll - 'how many have contributed to the CC forum'...

Might have been useful to have added some of this to the announcement, most of us have/had no idea of the costs involved...

I reckon 'we' should have had no reason to ask TBH....if you need to know 'why' I reckon the spirit of CC has passed some people by.

Your point is a little obscure Noodley (to my vino addled brain) - care to elaborate?

I for one thought (and through experience spent) that servers cost pounds, ie less than 100.

Happy to contribute however...
