77"!!!! gosh i'm on 65" for the hills round my way. i'll give this a miss then.

I was thinking I might make my way over for this using a flatter route and trying to find the others once I got there.
I'm not planning on stopping out all day or going to a cafe but if you fancy company for the ride over, let me know eh?

Just to let you know, we found out today that Helen has made it into the top 20 hill climbers for the National

it wasn't a certainty so we are both very happy and a wee bit nervous so any support will be massively appreciated. Now trying to beg, borrow or steal the lightest kit we can. Here is a link to the start sheet, oh and David Harmon will be half way up commentating. If you go to CTT [Cycling Time Trials] you can see the start sheets and timings etc. Helen is off at 11.39.

Will try and make this but not sure how early I can get a train from Preston on a Sunday morning in a Mancs direction. Good luck to Helen though!

I did see the National at The Rake a few years back, that was fantastic.

This was part of my route I rode on saturday.

I don't recall going up Pym's Chair before (been down it).

That is a bad boy.

Just to keep you up to date, we were on Long Hill today testing bikes, very, very tough day into a very strong gusting headwind. Lots of cyclists on there today many like us checking out bikes and the hill and all getting battered, fingers crossed for a northerly wind next Sunday. It's going to be an absolute cracker and wide open as to who wins in both the men's and women's.

Having not been to watch this sort of event before I'm wondering how early we ought to be in place for spectating so as not to interfere with the competitors?

Good luck! Hope the winds are favourable!

Normally the road is closed for a hill climb but this tends to apply to the shorter ones so Long Hill will be open to traffic as normal. It's ok to ride up while the competition is on, just don't ride two abreast, I keep a look out behind me and pull off to let competitors go by. A lot of people will be on bikes to watch and I would think the lay-by where David Harmon is commentating will be popular with cyclists but as yet I have no clue which one it will be. There is a big lay-by about half way up on the opposite side of the road to the climbers that cuts away from the road and has some shelter from the wind in the form of trees, and several others on the way up on the same side as the climbers..
The HQ, where everyone is welcome and the results go up "live" is at the bowling club in Whaley Bridge, expect to see literally hundreds of bikes [some of them BTW amazing] We should be back at the HQ by 12.30 watching the rest of the results come in.
The nerves are building

How much does it cost to Oldham?
I was gonna use racing as an excuse to skip this ride but now i'll be mainly fitting a new kitchen window. If you get my drift :hello:

Fingers crossed for Helen!

Route will be:-

Hazel Grove - Torkington Lane, back lanes towards High Lane, pop over A6 then down via Davenport Golf Club (Poynton) then via the back of Lyme Park, Potts Shrigley, Brickworks, left down hill, then right up Windgather, down Pyms chair into Goyt Valley, then up Goyts lane.

If I'm on my own might just head straight over via the A6 The event will be a little over two hours - starts at 10am - first one up will take a little over 20 mins, so finish at 12.30 ish. Planning to go near the finish. Remember to bring a race cape as a minimum as it might get cold hanging about.
