On the right is North America and on the far left is Europe. These two masses are moving apart at 2cm a year (fast as f**k in Tectonic terms) and the bit in the middle with the lake is sinking at 2mm a year. This will go on until it weakens enough to collapse in a huge earth quake and the whole area 'resurfaces' itself.

And you thought the crack in your ceiling was quite big!
