CD Player with optical out recommendation please...

As in another thread "tlh took one look at a revo supersystem and said "want that wun"" and thusly we have one, and it sounds even better than it looks.

Rega Planar 1 with the performance pack nestling next to it, awaiting the phono-amp to turn up.

So, whilst I mainly stream, tlh mainly likes CD's. The Revo has an optical in which I can connect to a CD player. Which CD player, with optical out, should I buy? Marantz CD6006 seems to get rave reviews, and is on budget, but the 5005 is quite a bit cheaper...

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Why did you buy this stuff when you mainly stream?

Anyway that logic aside I use a Yamaha DVD player for CD and SACD, it has optical out. It sounds very good too although I don't put it through a fashion accessory.

I put all my CD's on a NAS drive, encoded in lossless FLAC.

Can bring them all up in my Sonos app, saved them from being lost forever in the loft!.

Naim for me as it kills all opposition musically, although that may be out of your budget! Have you tried Cambridge audio? Don't listen to the likes of what hifi as their reviews are fairly biased. Important to try anything with your own amp and speakers to make sure it sounds correct, and get some decent cables...

I could do that. tlh prefers the tactile experience of real plastic.

I've had a Cambridge CD player, lasted about 5yrs. Similarly a Teac one again about 5yrs and currently a Denon one that's 4 1/2yrs old, wonder how long that'll last.

BTW the 'optical out' is a con, the digital signal has already been 'de-coded' and processed by the CD players chip then the now Analogue signal is put through an LED emitter to give the 'lased' output, mind you I use that to record onto my 'Minidisc' simply for convenience (it automatically splits the recording up into the separate 'tracks')
Anyone who tells you they get a better sound through an 'Optical' link into a DAC is talking twaddle unless they own a CD transport instead of a CD Player (ideally with a remote Power Supply)

You won't notice the difference, it's more of an add on sales gimmick in my opinion.

I've had and use cheapish CD players, Technics, Denon, that type of thing, pick them up at Cash Converter type of places. Even a DVD player works well, but doesn't look the part in a stack of separates.

A good many contemporary "hi-fi" CD players have optical outs that bypass their internal DACs surely? i.e. by going via the optical out you are using the player as a transport.

I tried Cambridge many years ago, via Richer Sounds, and won't be going back there. I've only just overcome my antipathy to Richer Sounds after what must be nigh-on 20 years.

In buying the Revo I went with the recommendation of two independent audiophile retailers one of whom directed me to got direct to REVO and get a refurb unit. Thus doing himself out of the sale of the Revo but winning the sale of the turntable, which is a better quality unit that I would otherwise have got for my budget, as I was able to use the saving on the Revo to get something a little nicer.

Ultimately it will all probably end up as a stack of entry level separates in the Club and the Revo will go to the kitchen.

Well since having children only my naim cd player is used... my naim amp and dynaudio floorstanders have been packed up and put in the loft... avoids little fingers destroying them!
