Century a month register??

I just been viewing the 2011 century a month register. I checked out some of the rides where people claim their route climbs 5000 or more feet. How is that possible when britain itself only reaches 4,409 feet (according to wikipedia)? I checked a few of the place names and they are indeed located within the UK.

So if I cycled up 100 metres (in altitude) and back down 100 metres and then went up 50 metres, would my climb count as 50 metres or 150?
