Last October I bought a 2017 rim-braked Cervélo R3 on eBay. With a SRAM Red mechanical groupset, it was quite a light bike already, around 7kg for a 58cm frame with the Mavic Ksyriums it came with.
I rode it in a few hill climb races last autumn.
It also makes a rather nice fair-weather bike for summer riding:
But this autumn, I felt that I could make a really good HC bike out of it. I’m converting it to 1x and tricking it out with some Chinesium, hoping to be able to chisel the weight down towards 6kg.
A few weeks ago, I accidentally-on-purpose bought another Cervélo R3 on the ‘Bay to replace the day-to-day duties of this one, because clearly a thoroughbred HC bike is not ideal for everyday riding. In race trim, R3 Mk I will probably only see 50 miles of riding a year. (R3 Mk II, below, is my first properly modern bike.)
