Chain/ cassette problem

Sounds like:

a) you haven't indexed your gears properly
you need to replace your cassette too as it's worn to the old chain
c) both the above

Well looks like the bike is sorted.

Sods law, rode the bike to LBS and rode sweetly in terms of shifting probably the best it ever has. All the other knockings and noises have dissappeared!

I think the long and short of it is, while under load the bike performs differently than when its on its back!

Ahhhhhhhhhh, so, the bike was upside down. Now it all makes sense.

That's a salient point that should have been included in the OP. When a bike is upside down, the chain is not under tension therefore gears won't shift properly and the chain will jump around.

yep ...and the chain will also drag across the bottom of the rear mech cage as well if the chain is too long or the mech return spring is a bit weak
