I'm impressed that you even knew which side was which after you'd taken it off.
If it was me I wouldn't have a clue. But then I don't have a clue about a lot of things
The quicklink has a direction due to the clip that should be at the outside and closed end in the running direction, so directly after removing the open U, I put it back in from the other side.
After I got my avatar bike, the initial KMC chain was end of life after like a month. I then started hunting for longer lasting chains, and found the Gusset "Tank Chain", a 3/16" model, with plates twice as thick. After 3 months usage, weirdo dancing chain, sections hung tilted to opposite directions. Dealer had no explanation but a forum had: chainline, and after finding out how to measure, 5 mm, which I solved by Velosolo spacer between disc cog and mount.
I decided to put the dancing chain back on and flip it, and after another 3 months the sections hung right again.
I don't have a clue about alot things, but asking around or trying things out helps.
The clunk sound of this topic, is weird. Chain and teeth wear eachother all the time, if the clunk came from a mismatch / bad alignment roller - tooth, that is alike wear that got "undone" somehow. Wear removes material, removed material gives play, so it would require like hard dirt getting in and stuck, compensating for some of the play.
Or, it happened on a cassette, biggest rear sprocket, could it have been not used for a longer time, so it didn't wear further, chain did (on other sprockets)?
