When I replace chains on my bikes with triple chainwheels and 8 speed cassette I've always used Shimano's method which is big chainring, smallest cassette cog, then select the chain length so that the two jockey wheels in the rear derailleur are aligned vertically. This method is simple, straightforward and has never let me down. Can someone tell me if the same system works with a double chainset. I think it should but just making sure Thanks..

Yes, it will work with a double. See here......

You can check it with a chain length calculator like this.....

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
If I am replacing only the chain I measure it against the old one. If I am changing the cassette to get a bigger/smaller range I just use the calculator - works for me.

In my experience the method outlined in the park tools big blue book of bike maintenance works fkawlessly. You could go onto the park tools web site and see if there is anything there - a lot of it used to be provided free. Or crib a look in a bike shop - the book is more common than it used to be.

If all else fails and you are interested, i could check my copy.
