In their accounts of miracles, wrought through the application of oils of saints, the early ecclesiastical writers do not always state just what kind of oils of saints is meant. A chemical analysis has shown that the fluid contains nothing but the ingredients of water. Though the origin of the fluid is probably due to natural causes, the fact that it came in contact with the relics of the saint justifies the practice of using it as a remedy against diseases of the body and the soul. The present Bumma is the burial place of the Libyan martyr Menas, which during the fifth and perhaps the sixth century was one of the most famous pilgrimage places in the Christian world. The flasks of St. Menas were well known for a long time to archeologists, and had been found not only in Africa, but also in Spain, Italy, Dalmatia, France, and Russia, whither they had been brought by pilgrims from the shrine of Menas. Are you suggesting I should put Holy oil on my chain? Will the saints be looking down on me and make me able to ride faster for less effort?:smile:

My twopenneth...
On the grounds ive not studied it that much, or stayed with the same chains (thats important, because you must compare like for like, otherwise how do you know its the lube thats extended the life...and not the quality of chain itself)...my input isnt really that scientific, but here's my thoughts anyway...

8 speed . Chain lasted 6000 miles'ish/ 4 years'ish winter and summer use, and even then i only changed it because i got paranoid about it snapping. I never took 'that' much care of it, didnt clean it that much, oiled it moderately regularly with a mix of aerosol chain lubed (industrial variety), engine oil...whatever came to hand.

9 speed (KMC chain IIRC). at some stage, i experimented with WD40 after getting fed up with dirty chains because of using engine oil. Disastrous...the chain wore quicker than i'd ever have believed. And it was WD40'd very regularly. Never go down that road again...and it was hardly ever used in the winter !!!

10 speed . 1st chain wore surprisingly quickly. Removed, cleaned, dried, soaked in engine oil and wiped on a very regular basis...despite this, it didnt last long.
Fitted a FSA Team Issue chain(relatively budget i'd imagine)...same treatment...same outcome.

I've switched to Finish Line Dry..although i'm not sure why they call it that...its not that dry once applied...and i'm please with the silky feel when pedalling, but the chain doesnt stay as clean as i'd hoped and you have to re-apply the lube quite often. Perhaps i'm expecting too much :biggrin:

I've come to the conclusion (and its not rocket science) that most of the chains i've experienced are relatively budget (as fitted by the manufacturer) or by myself...and it doesnt matter how much care you take...budget chain will not last that long.

I'm getting an quality 10 speed chain next and sticking with Finish Line, see how it goes.

i came to the conclusion...
Engine oil work fantastically on a strong 8 speed chain. Winter use as well.
WD40 was disastrous.
Engine oil didnt work as well on 9 and 10 speed chains, but thats more likely because they were 'budget' chains....and lighter of course, therefore more prone to wear anyway.
I'd stick to engine oil...but really like the silky feel of Finish Line.

Well, according to the resident tribologist, you need a proprietary oil. Enough mineral oil to keep stuff slippy, enough fatty acids to adsorp to the metal. You don't need fancy waxes and detergents.

I'm currently using White Lightening Clean Ride on one bike and GT85 on 2 others. Not that impressed with WLCR as transmission quickly becomes noisy after 100 miles even if only used in dry conditions road riding despite loading the chain with it. GT85 is ok but a bit thin. Have been looking at Finish Line Teflon Dry Lube and Shimano Dry lube but can't find anyone who has stock. CRC have a shed load of people who have rated Finish Line Teflon Dry lube excellent. Is it? Finish Line XC Wet lube also gets a good write up as well. CRC won't have Shimano Dry lube until mid July.

Or should I try Ep90 gear oil as I have a few spare bottles in the garage or stick with GT85 on all my bikes? It is certainly the cheapest option and easiest to apply.
