15 mins into a ride yesterday my chain snapped. I rang my wife who came to get me and I went out again on my other bike.

Very annoying though as it was on my new bike with only about 100 miles on the clock. That shouldn't happen.
I haven't looked to see if a pin pinged out or whether a link sheared.

I'm going to ring the company who I bought the bike from - they should send me a new chain free of charge, right?

You're obviously producing far too much power!

I would have thought so, at the very least! Because the thought of a chain snapping after 100 miles concerns me. I'd be asking questions of 'fit for purpose', mechanics, the store...

I know it's tempting fate but I've never had a chain snap. 5 bikes, literally tens of thousands of miles. I'm almost at a loss to know HOW it could happen.

2 chains went on my sportive yesterday in the 1st 10 miles !

A new bike should not need a new chain unless it was made of cheese and was poorly set up , i would try and get a whole new bike out of them ore a refund !

They're sending me a new chain. The bike itself, Genesis Croix de Fer, is a joy. It's not a cheap bike though, so I am disappointed. Hopefully it was a bad chain, and I won't have any further problems.

Shimano chain by any chance? A tip for any other shimano chain owners, look for the joining pin (it has a flat grey profile, looks different to all the other pins on the chain. Take it out with a chain tool and throw it away. Rejoin the chain with a SRAM powerlink. I have done this on all the Cube stable of bikes... there are just too many "my shimano chain broke"stories out there!

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Not long ago fitted brand new KMC X10SL chain (expensive!) After less than 200 miles use, while on club run, intermittent clicking heard from rear end - thought rear mech needed adjusting, cassette changing, maybe? - BUT - before next ride, was lubing chain and noticed one of the side plates had come away completely from a roller at one end, angled outwards (not the quicklink). Lucky I noticed it. So even the top end chains can be faulty.
(I would have taken it up with the supplier but had bought it on offer 2 years previously, so doubted i'd get any comeback.)

The Shimano HG-53 is generally a reliable and long-lasting chain. Got to have been fitted shoddily/wrongly.

When you get the chain make sure it's fitted the right way round.

I had a look at the chain, and one of the links had actually broken. The thin part that looks a bit like a lollipop that the pin goes through only had one side. I don't know whether it bent and then the action of cycling made it break, or whether it just went.

These things happen.

I know of several recumbent owners who have snapped a 9 speed KMC chain. I use SRAM PC951 , have done for years and like both the link system, I do use a specialist tool for breaking the link, and the life I get from them, but most of all I like the price.
