Ah. Having just googled it, basically it is an oil filter remover doobry.

@Puddles I have recently learned to use the tool, having needed to take a cassette off - had freewheels before, so different tool. I knew what the chain whip was for, but did not know how to actually use it.
My friendly LBS lady bike mechanic explained it all, and let me remove the cassette myself.
Discovered also that the last 3 small cogs of my cassette are detachable, so in theory you could buy replacements without buying a whole new cassette, alas the mechanic says nobody sells those cogs separately, so the reason why they can be removed must be an engineering/design one.

At one point you could buy them individually, I've got an 8 speed Dura-ace that are all individual sprockets and spacers on one of my wheels so maybe it was only on 'top of the range' level kit or it could be that shops/manufacturers make more money when selling you a complete one instead of allowing you to buy just the ones that are worn.
I also believe professional teams have access to them in order to assemble 'custom' cassettes for particular routes/riders as and when needed but maybe the use of 10-11 speed cassettes has removed this need. @Nigelnaturist is yer man when it comes to this I think.

@ayceejay Beginning to wonder if the site should be renamed B.D.S.M. . net, why would anyone need whipping for not knowing what a certain tool is for.
@Pat "5mph" certain smaller cogs are available but as @raleighnut points out it tends to be upward from Ultegra
most cassettes up to 9sp can be split, also I believe the tigra 10sp can be, the lower three gears on the 105 and Ultegra cassettes I have are on a spider so can't be split, however certain sets i.e, a 17-19 for example can be got for Ultegra and I believe dura-ace and certain individual cogs for both ranges/

At one time all of the cassette rings were separate so any one could be replaced.

Still being able to remove the smallest allows the fitting of an extender.

Another daft question ( I am ignorning the gear thing, I have had the gear thing explained thoroughly but I am still a bit huh? the bikey fixey man will be explaining the gear thing to me with visual aids)

Whats a freewheel? I thought fixed wheel you did not have gears? or is it that you just have one cog and one gear and so you need to change the gear to one that suits you?
