Chain link pliers are a necessity.

KMC chains are terrible for rusting.

SRAM quick links are the best with Shimano chains. Their HG53 was recently £6.29 with CRC so I bought quite a few. I have used expensive chains in the past HG93, Dura-Ace when they've been on sale. Apart from being marginally lighter I couldn't detect any difference in shifting and they didn't last any longer than lower 'spec' chains in the range. Hence I now use Shimano HG53. Much cheaper and does the same job.

How long will a chain last is like asking how long is a piece of string? Keep it clean and well lubed and don't push heavy gears for maximum life. Check your chain regularly. I use a Park tool. I get tens of thousands of miles before cassettes or chain rings become worn out.

How you cycle and over what terrain, whether you ride with or without heavy panniers, whether you are a grinder or a spinner will all affect how a chain wears. I get about 5-6k miles out of my chains but then I am a spinner and not a grinder.
