thanks and this powerlink thing is it re-usable ? can i break the chain sevral times or do i need spare powerlinks ?

i see halfords have these but there not the same make ?

The powerlink is reusable when you get the chain before you but it on the bike try and put the chain togever so you know how it works.

Looks interesting. Chains are my main area of doubt. I know it's rare (like it's happened to me once in my cycling lifetime - 3 mile push home) but I dread one going on me when I'm out. How easy is this one to fit/mend? What do you need to carry with you to do it?

You will initially have to shorten the chain before you fit it, for this you need a chain rivet extractor. Websites like Sheldon Brown will tell you all you need to know about this, it is fairly straightforward. Many multi-tools come with a built in chain tool that will do for roadside emergencies. It is actually rare for a chain to break unless it has been bodged during fitting, though one of mine let go recently while climbing a hill. The first one I have had break in over forty years.
