Changing square taper cartridge on eccentric BB

I have an eccentric bottom bracket, clamped by 2 external bolts.
My ST cartridge unit is nearing the end of life and I need a new one.
When changing them, can you leave the EBB block in place, held by it's clamp, or do you have to remove it and hold in a more substantial device?

On my Dahon Cadenza (2008 mountain-bike style with 26" wheels) I found that it was fine to leave the EBB in the frame; however I should qualify that in that I had rotated the EBB several times to account for chain stretch, and probably tightened up the EBB bolts as much as the 8mm hex bolts would let me with the standard length allen key I was using.
