Changing the name of a road

I'm at the very early stages of getting the local council to change the name of my dad's road and wondered if any of the good folk of cycle chat have undergone the same process. Without going into tedious details there are 2 roads in town with the same name and as you can imagine there has always been confusion even though the roads in question ar on opposite sides of town and have different postcodes.

Are there any particular pitfalls or issues I need to be aware of?

So far the local councillor and the "man in the relevant council department" are in favour of changing the name so hopefully everything may run smoothly.

Thanks

Don't have a word that requires an apostrophe. Since that will upset everyone.

We were going to be Hayfield Rise when our house was built. The council said no, as you turn into Hayfield Avenue, then Hayfield Road, so we were still Road.

My dad's road has a Station Road, Station Close and Station Gardens nearby but I don't think changing to Station Street for example would be a good move. A guy at work lives in Station Road and he told me there's confusion between Road, Close and Gardens all the time. I think a totally unconnected name is best.

The house used as the policewoman's home in 'Happy Valley' is in Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge. There is a Hangingroyd Road (and a Hangingroyd Close) just round the corner by the Co-op. I have known even locals get mixed up between them.

There was a Lane Crescent in a village in Ayrshire when I lived up there. Must have been about 4.55pm when they chose that name before clocking off after another gruelling day in the council offices.

If and when you are successful make sure it's properly registered and recognised and EVERYBODY knows about it.

I used to live in a street where the developer had changed the name. Everything seemed ok till my ex-wife had cause to call the fire brigade regarding smoke coming from behind the washer drier (she was pregnant at the time and couldn't move it herself to check). 45 minutes later the fire engine turned up after getting hopelessly lost. After quickly determining the cause of the smoke was nothing major the lead fireman got straight on the radio to control and have them update their systems with the old and the new street names cross referenced.

Absolutely. Incidents similar to yours have occurred now and then over the years in my dad's road and after yet another shocker a few weeks back I've had enough and thankfully everyone I've spoken with in the street and council are behind the change and making sure everyone knows about it will be a top priority. I think a big splurge in the local paper as well as fire, police, ambulance and post office too will be top of the list as well as utility companies although each resident will have to inform the DVLA, insurance, their doctor etc
