My road, in London SE10 has the same name as a road 15 miles away in London NE10
We go through phases of getting their post, usually correctly addressed, to the extent we know their name, bank balance, credit history and both kids exam results.

I presume all my neighbours get the the same issue, as do the residents of the other road

The situation has been in existence since at least the 1880's, both roads have institutions in them called after the road, so it would be a major hassle to change them, we all just live with it.

Now don't get me started of multiple Greenwich's, New York, Connecticut, Sydney, Norfolk are the ones I have been to, but there are about 10 more I have not

The house used as the policewoman's home in 'Happy Valley' is in Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge. There is a Hangingroyd Road (and a Hangingroyd Close) just round the corner by the Co-op. I have known even locals get mixed up between them.
Just as bad elsewhere,
Savile Park. two adjoining
Savile Park Gardens
Savile Park Street
Savile Park Road. Two postcodes.

Many moons ago when I was a "h'officer of the law" I worked in a city where there was 2 streets with the same name, and as a result of changing "beats" became known to residents of both. It was not uncommon for me to arrive at a door saying "you called?" to be met with "wrong one"...

I'm beginning to understand why you got the heave-ho ...

How do councils go about changing the names of streets after the name has been discredited? For example Jimmy Saville Avenue, Rolf Harris Road? Do they ask residents for new suggestions?

The guy at my local council actually mentioned a road in Leeds named after Savile, and he said it was changed within a day or 2 of the scandal erupting. He didn't say how they arrived at a new name though. Apparently each council has it's own name policy. In my council area a developer can submit whatever names they like and if the council are ok with them, that's that as it were. In a neighbouring council area, there's an "approved list" of street names to pick from.

Incidentally, the reason my town has 2 roads with the same name is that back in the 1800s the area was effectively 2 villages which grew over time into 1 town.
