Charlie Gillett RIP

DJ Charlie Gillett died last night. A great shame and a huge loss. It was Charlie Gillett who turned this raving Heavy Metal fiend into a lover of World music with his show Undercurrents on Capital and Charlie Gilletts World Of Music. He single handedly opened my once blinkered eyes to some wonderful forms, styles, sounds and rhythms of music from around the world. Salif Kieta, Tinariwen, Mayra Andrade, Razia, Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Boabab and many many more.

He was to World Music what John Peel was to Indie/Punk music.
He will be sorely missed.

Very sad.

I used to listen to his show on the World Service religiously and the time was that pretty much every CD I bought was by an artist I heard on his show. There are still plenty to buy too.
