OTOH the Guardian notes that he is 'known for his inflammatory, often racist and xenophobic commentary...' Not excusing this heinous act, but (hopefully) useful context given the OP's description.

Like I said, I did not always agree with things he said. But he would have conversations with anyone and give his opinion. He was assasinated for having a different opinion to someone else.

In all the clips I have seen of him, he was always calm, polite, knowledgeable and put his point across well.

Yes, he was the most calm, polite and knowledgeable racist, homophobic, Bible bashing bigot I've seen for a while.
The acceptable face of fascism.

I do somewhat casually follow American politics, I listen to Americast and watch stuff on tv but can't say I knew about this guy.
As has been said, it's terrible shame for anyone to die young and violently but hardly unique in USA.

By far more concerning to me is the continuing mass shootings that occur and the total lack of any action other than really helpful "thoughts and prayers".

But that's the guardian. Take their views on anyone with whom they editorially disagree with a pinch of salt.

He may have been all those things (or not, having never previously heard of the fellow I couldn't say), but don't take their word on it. They may appear more civilised and reasonable, but fundamentally they work from the same play book as the Mail, stoking division, fear and upset (albeit from the opposite direction) witn a view to alarming their readers into coming back for another fix.

That is the problem with extreme people like him

some of them shout easily debunked rubbish from the rooftops
and are easy to prove wrong

but people like him sit down and discuss using facts and ask sensible questions
and can make their opinions sound reasonable

and it would take an in depth discussion and full knowledge of the all the facts and circumstances to show why they are wrong
and most people cannot, or will not, go into that depth and use that level of intensity

so you get a lot of extreme politicians - no mentioning any names but it applies to both sides - that convince people
in spite of saying things that CAN be disproved
but their followers are just not able to do so

and by "cannot" and "not able" I mean in terms of intelligence, persistance and just plain time and energy to go into it fully

Nope, that is not what you said:
Charlie Kirk was a political activist from the USA. He was a smart guy who travelled the world talking to audiences on a whole range of political and social matters. He liked to tour university campus in the USA and have quastion and answer sessions with the students.

In all the clips I have seen of him, he was always calm, polite, knowledgeable and put his point across well.

Yesterday, while giving one of these talks at a Utah University in front of a large outdoor crowd. He was assasinated by a single shot to the neck. There is a manhunt taking place for the shooter.

I must admit, I find this shocking. Its like going back to the Kennedy assasinations. After all these years, you would think we would be able to accept that we are allowed to have different opinions to other people.

He leaves a wife and two children.

RIP
I did not compare him to the Kennedys. I said "It is like going back to the Kennedy assasinations". It is the sort of action we do not often see these days.

He didnt stand on street corners spouting extremism, he went to liberal universities to ask liberal /left wing students and academics to challenge his views.
