LP's and sound quality

Daughter bought us a 'new' The Smiths LP for our wedding anniversary. Got round to playing it, and the sound quality isn't great, loss of range. Anyway, there are 8 tracks per side so it's been compressed - noticeably less quality than other LP's.

The LPs I have head since the1970s ARE the true sound

For example Dark Side of The Moon sounds weird when I have heard it played live

because my copy came vis Mail Order and when it arrived the LP was bent - not flat
Hence the arm slows down fractionally when "going uphill" and speeds up fractionally when "going downhill"

so that is how I expect it to be

Wish You Were Here is also strange - my copy was very "skiddy" and I used to put a penny (OLD style) on the stylus otherwise it would skid across the disc
It worked better when I got a proper turntable in about 1980 - and I no longer needed the penny
as you can imagine the sound changed a bit
BUT THAT IS THE CORRECT SOUND
because that was what I listened to in my bedroom right through my teenage years

All recordings are not equal, all pressing are not equal, and anything "re-mastered" is certainly not equal.

Well, an original older LP is on (Thompson Twins) and it sounds way better. So it's definitely not my 40 year old JVC separates system (it's has a new needle).

We're off to see Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins and Blancmange tomorrow.
