Cheaper by bike or not ?

As I was coming out of our local Tesco today as I glanced their notice board I saw a charity bike ride. I believe that it was something to do with local churches. Anyway, when I looked at the cost to enter it was £10 but if you had an ebike it was £20. Am I missing something ? I`ll cancel that new ebike order right away !

Just looked at the website pages for the churches ride in September. Here in Kent it seems to be free to enter, they just expect you to get sponsored.

If its true, its a bit off. Mrs D rides an ebike because her MS makes it sadly impossible for ride a normal machine. A lot of ebikie riders will be less able or perhaps seeking to extend their cycling career as they knock-on in years, and this is a discriminatory act towards them.

I think most of these rides refuse to accept any liability, as far as possible, so that seems unlikely.

From what I understand, these church rides have no fixed routes. The idea is just to visit as many churches as you can and probably have a cake at each stop.

I doubt they could run the event without liability insurance.
E-bikes of course are a bigger liability.

the people I see riding e-bikes does not suggest that they're mostly for older or less abled people.

Mostly or not, there are disabled and older folk that use ebikes as the only means of staying on two wheels, and through no fault of their own these folk, often with a lower income than others, are being financially penalised for having the temerity to turn up on an ebike.

Assuming the orgaisers are a registered charity they should have an equality policy or DEI statement in order to demonstrate how their processes and mission comply with the Equality Act.

All this is law, and can't simply be ignored because you've seen someone with acne riding an ebike. They must demonstrate how this measure is compatible with their equality statement.
