The only thing stranger than the cheats, is the people getting their knickers in a twist and flagging rides up because they "lose" a KOM. Very odd behaviour.

It has been covered before. Apparently, there is even some software which will doctor GPX files in a subtle fashion so it doesn't look too obvious that the saddos are cheating!
Read about http://www.digitalepo.com on another site. Seems a lot of folk use it to subtlety alter data.

It is apparently easy to spot though due to some artefacts it leaves in the finished file.

Why worry about folk who are unknown to you and whose honesty is questionable. Focus on personal times only like time trialists do then you are dealing with 'The race of truth' the greatest leveller of them all.
That's how I use Strava, it's pretty sad if people do 30-40 in their car and register it on Strava as a bike ride but I'm sure some people will to get KOM
I'm mainly using it for my PB's and keeping an eye of average speeds and elevation

I us strava to track my own progress , any kom is a bonus

What gets me are the segments that get flagged when they are perfectly safe. I have one that I cycled on Friday. Nothing dangerous about it. can only assume that someone has lost their KOM and decided on retribution! http://www.strava.com/segments/4982295

(Don't get me wrong, I will never be in the standings on this one... way down the 'leaderboard' I would just liked to have seen my own progress on that 1mile segment)

If I was vain enough to use Strava, I'd want a KOF , King of the Fatties/Flatlands, category because I'm not very good on hills.
Vanity? It is useful for navigation, and recording personal ride data. It's not all about chasing KOMs in the vast majority of cases.

It does seem a bit odd that one person flagging a segment can have it shut down ( is that right ?) Its understandable if someone has made a section through a public park or a road with loads of traffic lights a segment . Can you not appeal against a flagged segment ?

I just like to go out and challenge others who have done the route as something to work towards, I just wish that all the times were genuine, it's a 2.2 mile road and looking at the speed chart it jumps between 0-50 mph at a pretty constant rate along the route
