Looks like he was getting out the saddle when he fell off.
As above do your own maintenance and pick up on when a crank isn’t quite on tight enough.

It's not unlucky - its negligence. The rider had the opportunity to do a pre ride check, as do we all, and he clearly chose not to do so. Cyclists make their own luck with this type of thing.

My point was more to do with falling off when sat.. didn't really get that..you just steer with no power..
Easy when off the seat giving it the beans, anyone's going tarmac munching when that happens..

Group rides aren't all racing or racey. I've been hit by other bikes and not fallen. You need a stabler bike

See my above post I don't think he was sat when he came off. It looks like he's a bit out of the saddle.

Not necessarily.
One of my better saves was out the saddle sprinting into a gyratory, on fixed, when the pedal axle snapped.
One foot bounced off the road, pedal body still attached, then flailed about in the air; the other foot was still going round with its pedal.

I had a square taper crank loosen on the way back from a bike shop BB change. It felt the oddest thing ever and I stopped to check, and take it back.

Though you probably could have done it yourself.
And then fitted your own in future.

Care is needed not to cross-thread but other than that it's very straightforward.
Edit, my cross threading caution was related to the bb change.

Certainly do change my own now.
I think it was either before I'd acquired the tool or when it had gone on loan to someone who hadn't returned it.

Crank removal / refitting tool.
tool for tightening up crank bolts.
Tool for making sure cranks are unlikely to come off whilst riding.
That’s pretty much it.

For 2 piece cranks YES.
For 3 piece cranks you need a crank puller to get them off.
And for cottered cranks you need a ballpein hammer and a spanner to remove and fit.

It was the BB tool that I needed at the time. I think of lent mine out and not got it back.

Posted this before but shows just how quick an accident can happen with broken cranks, the cyclist broken his collar bone, refused help and cycled home after a temporary repair solo, His crank arm was not tightened up correctly by a lbs.
Hes back on form and cycled 11,000 miles last year.
