What happens if you check-in online for a flight and then for some reason can't get to the airport? Do you have to pay a penalty?

I thought the whole point of checking-in was so that airlines would know exactly who was on a flight and how much fuel they would have to load (etc). It would also allow them to sell stand-by tickets if people didn't turn up.

You know that last bit when they scan your boarding pass at the gate just before you board......

online check in just gets passport info etc onto their systems, saves them typing it in.

And you scan your boarding pass at security (and if you check a bag in)
