it just struck me...now I know about Shimano components, but apart from that, there aren't really any Japanese bikes, well apart from this one and ISTR seeing another somewhere, but you would have thought they would be major players...

AFAIK Fuji are a US company. Mine says it's designed in the USA and the frame's made in Taiwan.

There are loads of those compact type road bikes in Tokyo. Even Bianchi and Cinelli make them particularly for the Japanese market. They look really cool in real life.
