Chester Cycle Routes

Hello Everybody . I bought a O/S Landranger map 1:25000 of Chester . And was pleased to see there was 2 x dedicated NCR5 routes cycle path's starting In the City centre along the Shropshire Canal . at Telfords Wharf . Heading west .
This enabled you to avoid all the main roads and heavy traffic .......................
One goes out to Sealand and the other to Connah's Quay . Both around 8 miles long .
Q)
Are there steps to traverse on entering and exiting to Cycle routes .
Q)
Also along the Towpaths does It get very muddy .
As I am hoping to cross Chester to go to North Wales . My bike will be heavely loaded with Panniers .
Any advice I will be greatfull accepted .

Can't comment on the route, but it can get muddy around Telfords...although not soft mud that you can't ride though, and it doesn't tend to stay after the rain.

Crossing Chester along the towpath is easy - but the towpath can be narrow in places so you'll need to take care. There's also a steep section (downhill going west - towards Sealand) as the towpath runs alongside Northgate locks, underneath Northgate and the ring road. It's concreted with a few minor steps (say 3-4") - you can ride down it but coming back up would be a push on a heavy bike. But in general it's an interesting section with lots to see.

Take care crossing Sealand Road - it can be busy at rush hour.

There is a nasty bridge going over the canal by Telfors, uneven, steep and goes round, I am sure with a loaded bike you can push it over this, I ride it but have seen a few pushing bikes. Also did a bit of a recky on the way to work this morning, generally the path is tarmaced, apart from telfords as previously said this is compressed ground/gravel and should be fine at worse a some puddles there. And finally watch out for the cobbled sections under bridges, very slippy when wet!! Good luck.

I am hoping to go on a tour when the weather drys up and Improves back to the Sunny warm stuff .
