Chile Miners Rescue

Mods. Could this thread please be merged with "Chilean Miners"?

Bit cheeky Gerry! This thread started in the early hours, when the capsule was bringing the first rescued to the surface etc - the curmudgeons 'downstairs' didn''t kick off until about 10:45 - something like that.
This is for people like Fnarr et moi - to illustrate and congratulate effort and compassion. not to rehash the 'hard news' aspect of the stories that endlessly unfold "How much will they get?" "How many mistresses?" etc - it's just a human thing.

Now I will go and read P&L - for some lightweight stuff ;)

So many people to sue plus film, book and merchandising rights/royalties/distribution to be negotiated, not to mention the ensuing marital strife ending with divorce owing to some of the miners' indiscretions being revealed .................

Mining companies and subcontractors to be defended against class or individual's legal actions.

The lawyers must be drooling at the prospect of the sound of "Kerching!" (in Spanish).

Lawyers rubbed their hands together when the BP deep water rig blew up in the Bay of Mexico. I seem to remember eleven employees lost their lives in that disaster. A whole coastline has been covered in oil causing extensive environmental damage and peoples' livelihoods lost. So the rescue of the Chilean miners is a miraculously happy ending to what so easily could have been yet another mining disaster.

I was in tears when the the little kid was reunited with his dad (the first miner to emerge, I think). It was very moving.

I know this after the event. But, I have been pondering the location of the escape shaft in underground refuge; intentional or a cock up. You can take a view that positioning it on the side wall would reduce the risk of a catastrophic roof collapse, alternatively, you could propose that they nearly missed the refuge.

Overall, it was a great success and it is nice to have a good news story.
