Before it was stolen I had a Ribble carbon. It was my first ever "good" bike so have no experience of other "good" bikes
I am seriously thinking of one of these two bikes.
I am 68 yrs old and reasonably fit. Not "minted" but cost is not the issue........it's whichever is "best for the job".
I want it for...............
Comfortable riding.
road rides-20-40 milers.
tow paths/penine way/some very light forrest type trails.
I have never ridden a GOOD modern alloy but am advised by LBS that a good modern alloy will be better and absorb more vibration than a Ribble carbon.

As I say......opinions wanted.

Two very different bikes there Dave.

A CX type bike might be best for the job.

I always used to have the opinion that Aluminium frames were really harsh to ride. My Defy proved that that was wrong. I was also amazed that when bought my Carbon frame, that it was both more responsive and more comfortable at the same time.. It's witchcraft I tell you

Between those two, the Spesh looks like it's based more on a CX, the Cube more on a road frame. I think I'd be leaning towards the Spesh, their carbon frames with the trick inserts are supposed to be very comfortable.

Both bikes look very nice, I personally like Cube as Mr M has a hybrid, good spec for ££
If you have narrowed it down to just 2 bikes I would test drive both, bearing in mind exactly what you want from the bike.
If you could hire a demo bike all the better, happy shopping.

Steel for comfort
I agree - Croix de Fer sounds perfect for you.

Except he's not wanting drops. I'd get an equilibrium frame and have it built to whatever spec you want (as I did although I do have drops). There'll be other steel frames too, Condor do some gorgeous ones

MIssed that reply  There is a chap that commutes past my work on a white CdF with flat bars. Not only does he have a nice bike he finishes earlier than me

I agree they do appear to give good spec for the £.
The Spech dealer has made it clear they WILL NOT allow a test ride...........only on the instore machine. Not sure about the Cube dealer.
