I'm about to go on a two week touring trip through France for which I leave very soon (first one so nothing too heavy, but aiming to do as much as we can a day). I'd then like to use the bike just for commuting in the city for as long as it will last. I've been into local cycle shops and this is what was recommended to me (although my original budget was actually more like £500) :
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/alight.2/19207/77384/ (I think this one, though I'm sure I remember it being £299 in the shop. Either way, it was a Giant around that price range)

However I feel worried about putting the money down for some reason. My other alternative is renting a touring bike and then buying a much cheaper one second hand when I'm back, for using round the city. The last two second hand bikes I've bought haven't been much of a success though, might be nice to have something new to call my own...
Advice appreciated, thanks!
Edit: choice between three I should say
