As I was on a fixie I could have reversed but I think this would have been taking the piss.

What a missed opportunity.

Having rewatched the video, I can't see why anyone would think you should have pulled to the left. At the point the car pulls out you're going fast, preparing to overtake it anyway (following on from looking over your shoulder) and there's no guarantee there'll be a gap to the left because the car might have stopped if the driver had seen you. The only sure escape route is to the right.
