Christmas Commuiting

Brrrrrr,

a cold ride in today on icy roads and while the general traffic is slower and more considerate there are still a few sleighers out there to get my goat up...

today I had

pedestrians dashing through the moving traffic causing several cars and a cyclist (me) to brake hard and skid a little

some cars were sheparding me into the ice-laden cycling lane - why oh why can I not ride on your road?

and then there were the three wise men rushing somewhere and not paying enough attention, one in taxi, one in a car and one on a scooter pipping his hooter - the scooterist was in the wrong, he overshot the junction but the taxi was travelling a bit too quick

some times it's like being a lamb to the slaughter being a cycling commuting

fortunately it's christmas, I am in a jolly mood and today's incidents took on a yule flavour.

it was the coldest its been for a good while though, I'm thinkin' 80s or something

Well a happy mince pie to you. I am also still commuting even after several other cycle commuters at work have called me nuts.

Today, I had two cars buzz me on purpose for not being in the cycle lane. Its -7 and the cycle lane is full of ice, snow so I cycle one foot to the right of the cycle lane line. I caught the second one up to exchange some seasons greetings. Apparently I should not cycle in the middle of the road. I had to resist sticking a partridge up his pear tree.

I came off my bike on Friday and the doc advised no cycling for 2 weeks to give the knee and wrist a chance to recover. by the time i had walked to the bus stop in the morning I could have ridden to and from work . the trip home in the evening is even worse. and thats with reduced traffic :OMG:


to top it all off I have got youngest a bike for Christmas ( his first proper bike with pedals ( single speed but not fixed wheel - I am not having him riding it backwards like i did with my first fixed wheel ) and i won't be able to ride with him over christmas holidays.

In busy areas you have always got to look ahead and think ahead, you should always be able to stop if you need to, when it is icy stopping takes 10 times longer, so you have to slow down to allow for this. If you skid then you were going too fast...

Thankfully I can go off-road for most of my commute, so car interaction is minimal. I've been moving more and more off-road as the driving has got worse. I think people are starting to get complacent now as the snowy roads are becoming more familiar. Powder snow is hard work but at least it's consistent
