So who else is waiting til mid afternoon on Christmas Eve to wander into their local supermarket and pick up whatever fresh food is left at discounted prices?

No cheats allowed - the family eat whatever you can get - it has to be after 3pm on Christmas Eve...

I usually buy my Christmas pudding in mid-January, when it's dipping below half price. Does that count?

When I worked at Iceland we used to get people coming frantic at 4pm on Xmas Eve, dismayed because we'd run out of 15lb frozen turkeys - no matter that such a bird would take days to defrost....

I have done it in the past, you often get some good bargains though in recent years I don't think it's been as good as the past. I remember getting a huge tray of veg for a pound. And definitely have had some good meat bargains though you have to be flexible.

You missed out on the Partridge in a pear tree then?

Waitrose were fresh out of those.

Christmas dinner will be over by 3pm on Christmas Eve in this house so I'm out.
Over , mine know they will be lucky to get it before 3pm and that there is only one meal that day ... you can snack on any left overs if you feel like it at some stage!

Even better, when I worked at Iceland, we used to divvy up the chilled stuff that would go out of date before we reopened. One year, I got a dozen pork pies!

(Pork pie is a traditional Christmas breakfast in Leicester, so we got a lot of stock in, and sometimes it just didn't all sell. We froze them to last for months!)

 Hang on, nobody told me this. How many breakfast pies have I missed out on over the years.

I have a friend who hangs around the smoked salmon in Sainsbury's on Christmas eve afternoon waiting for them to mark the price down. Apparently it can be quite a scrum.
