It's the sort of headline that gets the response that I would usually give.

The deal is, I am lucky to live in a Victorian town that has q silver band. They give a concert the last Sunday before Christmas every year at the local ciu club at which i am a member.

I can't actually explain how good this concert is.

I will post tomorrow if anyone responds with their experiences.

Glad it was good but I've never heard Milton Keynes described as a Victorian town before!

Christmas started on the 3rd of December for me, that's when the brass band I play gave the first of seven concerts this month. Just the small matter of playing carols around the village on Christmas morning to go...

Hmm, another MK knocker, no need for that 3BM!

Historically, Milton Keynes is based around 5 old towns, Bletchley, famed for bletchley park home of the world war 2 code breakers, Stony Stratford, birthplace of the cock and bull story. wolverton where the royal train was kept, New Bradwell, where I live and the centre of the universe and Newport Pagnall.

But back to the original point of the thread. The concert is always on the last Sunday before Xmas and for me, starts the Xmas week perfectly. The same band play carols and hymns around the streets on Xmas eve and again on Xmas morning from 6.00am. It sets the whole thing up brilliantly.

I don't think you can put a value on that sort of community spirit. Long may the New Bradwell silver band continue.

Can't beat a brass or silver band for getting the feeling good feeling.

Or the Salvation Army Band for bringing a lump to my throat. I don't know how they do it, with the same instruments as any oher brass band, but it's inevitable.

I'm doing my last minute shopping on Thursday, and I'm hoping they'll be in town.

The Darlington Sally Bash brass band used to march past my house on a Sunday on their way to their citadel. It was a signal for me to start coming round from Saturday night's excesses to ready myself for Sunday lunchtime's excesses.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
again on Xmas morning from 6.00am
That would put me into a very bad mood indeed. I'm often out till 1am on Christmas Eve doing Midnight Mass - the last thing I'd want on Christmas morning is to be woken up by a bunch of amateur brass banders - my least favourite kind of all semi-classical groups, and so, so dull.

For me Christmas began to start last weekend, when I went back for the first time to see one of the oldest Christmas traditions in the country, then played for nine lessons and carols on Sunday evening. Unfortunately I'm back in work this week...
