Excuse me being a ignopotamus*, but what exactly is a ''q silver band?'' Is it a brass band with an added ingredient ? Or do bands now go up all the way to carbon fibre?

* not a word but it should be.

Silver bands traditionally played silver plated instruments and were seen to be more affluent and successful than the lacquered brass instrument players in a brass band.

Some bands still retain the word silver in their names even tough the distinction between the two types of band have become blurred over the years.

The q was probably a typo.

Aha, I live and learn!

I wonder though, if we have to be thatfussy about what the instruments are made of, shouldn't we call string orchestras ''wooden bands?''

It's a historic reason that was, in the past, used to display affluence and influence. Tradition is the driving force now.
