I don't like it personally, too tacky and a waste of money and resourses. However, if it raises money for charity then perhaps that is fair enough.

Unfortunately for the neighbours there is no law against light pollution as there is with noise.
I have a neighbouring house where the landlord placed a flood light in the front carparking area that shone light straight into my bedroom window. There was nothing I could complain with via the council or EHO. Thankfully, when the lamp blew they didn't replace it.

There's a house in the next village to us who have "BAH HUMBUG" up in lights on the side of their house. If I go past tonight I'll get a photo.
Someone in our office at work has those lights, apparently bought from B&Q a few years ago but B&Q do not sell them anymore.

If anyone is going to do Christmas lights they shouldn't do anything unless they can better this.....

Like York, then?

The Illuminating York event happens every October. I missed this one as I was away, but I heard about it from friends, and only just thought to look on Youtube.

My favourite was the year they 'coloured in' the west end of the Minster by projecting a false colour image exactly onto the stone - statues had flesh coloured faces and coloured clothes, and foliage was green etc. Spectacular! And a couple of years back they had live drawing - teams of artists drew doodles and pictures on electronic tablets, and the images were projected live onto part of the Roman walls. The images were sort of linked, but there wasn't a narrative as such - you sort of made up your own story from what you saw. It kept me and Mum captivated for a good half hour, on a cold October night!

I ought to grump about domestic displays, in terms of pointless expenditure and energy use, but on the other hand, festivals at this time of year are all based around light for a reason - we need cheering up!

I recall some self righteous yoghurt weavers' protests being dismantled by some environmental organisations on the grounds that the environmental impact is minimal because of the duration of the displays and the relatively low wattage and that there were more important things to fret about than some folks' exuberant displays of tackiness.

Wow!!!

However back on topic.

I don't know why, but it seems that the over-decorated houses are in the very areas that are least able to afford them!
