I read once that Bing Crosby hadn't got a feckin clue who Dave Bowie was when he did that, probably not true, funny though.

I saw or heard Bowie saying that recently (can't remember where or when, forgive the AiS moment). The introduction on stage apparently went:

DB: Hello Mr Crosby.
BC: Hello, who are you?
DB: I'm David Bowie, I'm singing a number with you on tonight's show.
BC: Oh yes, and what's your name?

He died just a month after recording the song. If you watch the video his voice is there but he has the look of a very confused old man.
