hi all,

the brompton front luggage system is great, but for my uni needs, it's cumbersome and user unfriendly. i was thinking of getting either a backpack or chrome messenger bag. the thing is tho my commute is 41 miles to uni and my next placement is further. my bag can weigh quite a lot sometimes (but not often) 15 kgs.

has or does anyone use a chrome messenger bag for long heavy commutes? the added bonus of these style of bags is that they are 100% waterproof. any advice or thoughts?

Its a weird thing. I have commuted with my Edinburgh sac for years and decided to try panniers as that lets me get to shirt pockets easier. Its all the same weight, but the panniers make the bike feel heavier. Obviously it is, but when me and the sac are on it, it should be the same. I have decided that panniers are for summer and the rucsack for winter.
Based on nothing.

My main problem with messenger bags is that they wear out one shoulder of your clothes. A rucksack distributes the wear over both shoulders, so you will get more "mileage" out of your clothes.

One base in summer with a rucsack your back gets hot & sweaty in winter its too cold and you don't mind that extra heat

The Chromes are fairly pricey. If I had that kind of budget for a messenger bag I'd go one better and get one of these. Custom made 'n' everything, with a floating truck tarp lining for proper waterproofing...
