The only problem now is will the driver want his revenge and take it out aon other/all cyclists?

I know, I already have my doubts about the intelligence of a man who thinks he can act like that in a van with his employer's name emblazoned across the side and back....

I don’t get the argument that letting people get away with things is better than pulling them up about it. The driver already has no respect – My view, spindrift, is that even the more Neanderthal of them will eventually modify their behaviour through a process of Pavlovian Respondent Conditioning - “I drove like a w***er today and then got a bollocking from the boss”, or “I had a pop at that cyclist and he actually fort back and dented my van” with possibly a “The last time I exceeded the speedlimit I got a NIP, 3 points and fine”.
After enough negative experiences the dim wit will eventually associate driving like an arse with the negative events happening in his life and possibly change his behaviour - after all, it works on dogs!

If you don’t report him, he’ll probably carry on behaving in that way…

nice one - you stood upto a bully - I for one hope he gets in a great big load of trouble....

Its a risk we take, but I would report them as well...

When I cycled a few times in May before my puntures put me off, I got clipped badly by a female driver in Renault, her wing mirror clicked my funny bone on my right arm, and the rubber padding trim along the side left a black mark on my calf.

Did she stop, Nope!!

I caught up with her a few yards later, as the traffic was stationary. She had not even realised the collision with my arm had pressed the wing mirror flat against her window!

She was apologetic but I bet 10 seconds later all was forgotten

Adrian

I would have asked for her insurance details, and taken a picture of her and the car. I would then have started the accident reporting and claim process, even if there was never any hope of an actual claim happening.

That's because something might turn out to be seriously wrong with your health or the bike later on, and also because it'll hit her in the insurance premiums when she renews. She wouldn't forget that in a hurry!!!

I agree, as i mentioned in my post, I would still report them for dangerous driving.

You know I was only thinking about this yesterday. Yes, Pavlovian methods work on animals and small children, but do they work on some grown ups? Ever? Seems to me a fair proportion never learn.. Or maybe the penalties are strong enough to get through..

Can't remember where it was, but I heard a great twist on the Pavlov thing - two dogs in a lab and one says to the other " 'ere, watch this. Everytime I salivate, that man writes something on a clipboard..."

Nice one – Eddie Izzard's “Pavlov’s Cat’s” sketch always had me laughing…

I think they do work, Arch. It just takes a lot of repetition and we might not always see the results. I've certainly noticed that if I keep telling a RLJing cyclist off for jumping the lights, a fair proportion tend to stop doing it after the 3rd to 6th time I've told them to stop.

Excellent!

It's like the dog/cat diaries thing...

Dog diary: "oh boy, breakfast! walks! sticks! oh boy, mud. Home. Nap. Oh boy, lunch! run round a bit... " etc etc

Cat Diary: "Day 342 of my incarceration. Humans still fail to respond to simple commands. New escape plan complete, but relies on help of lunatic fellow prisoner with stick obsession..."

Another email:

Afternoon Philip
Sorry for the delay in responding as promised in my e-mail of yesterday.
This is due to the fact I was invited to a client meeting last night in
Manchester for this morning.
Taking on board your e-mail below and supporting information which has
been supplied to me, I can confirm the Self-Employed courier in question
has been dealt with accordingly as per our Self-Employed Couriers
complaints procedure.
The summary of our findings are as follows for your information:
* The courier in question is a Self-Employed Courier who offers
his services to CitySprint on an Ad Hoc courier basis
* The courier at the time of the incident was not offering his
services to CitySprint and was actually undertaking some of his own
personal business
* The courier acknowledges his behaviour was unacceptable and
apologises for any inconvenience caused and is willing to write an
apology letter to you
* Additionally we have instructed him to undertake a Driver
Assessment program at his own cost & time
* CitySprint will not offer any business to him until we are
satisfied this course has been completed in full
CitySprint take matters of Road Safety seriously and over the past few
years we have engaged in several Road Safety training programs which
have seen the rate of road traffic incidences reduce.

CitySprint support the Road Safety charity Brake and we are always
continually reviewing safety processes to ensure safe driving on the
road.
Again I can only apologise for the conduct of this Self-Employed
individual and if you wish to report this to the Police, CitySprint will
co-operate in full.
Regards

Good response, Spinners. Interesting that the guy appeared to be using the CitySprint van for his own personal business at the time of the incident.

What a result - the fleet managers do take a dim view of this behaviour, especially when the vans are out on the road so much, and are the 'public face' of a company.

Even the Utility company I worked for took a dim view about poor driving.
