"what ought to have been a small incident sorted out easily turned into something big"

Classic lame defence. Have heard it dozens of times in disciplinary situations. What might the easy sorting out have looked like I wonder? "Shut up or you'll get yours?"

Because, dear James, you see, verbally assaulting someone at work isn't a small incident, and having done that, then to go on and physically assault someone at work is a HUGE incident.

Interesting point, its probably because you cant sack a Company or something.
You can choose not to have them supply whatever service you've contracted them to supply, though how will be a matter for the contract.

However it got there it seems to be the right outcome.

"he is always hungry and he is never full that is right it is the starving giant whos name is called jeremy clarkson and he has just been sacked from his job at the bbc for eating one of the producers on his car racing programme that is called top gear style challenge and i think that it is right for the mayor of the bbc to have a sack of him because you cant just go around eating people because you are a starving giant no matter how starving or giant you may be and it is not really a good example for him to set for younger giants as well because if they see him going around laughing his head off and spitting in his hands and picking up people and shoving them down his throat they will think that it is fine for them to do that sort of thing when they grow up as well and i hope that losing his job will make him learn his lesson and he will stop eating people and he will just stick to eating cows and horses and buildings instead. love from your friend Chris (Simpsons artist) xox"

Also the BBC will not be earning from him.

Yep and if its easier, cheaper and quicker to just let it expire.....
and all uber legal, and ultra simple. The customer doesn't even have to explain to the supplier why the contract is not to be renewed.

But, then again, even it was a fixed-term contract of employment then "expiration of contract" is a valid reason for dismissal.

The dogmatic liberal elite have finally kicked out Jeremy Clarkson. I hope they're happy.

[sacking Jeremy Clarkson is] further evidence of the Beeb’s self-emasculation, its sheepish, apologetic jettisoning of anything that might rile right-thinking viewers or make Hampstead-dwelling licence fee-payers choke on their Ovaltine.

Having read the evidence, I'm glad they sacked him. That's the kind of behaviour that was rife in the Arts 20 years ago but it really shouldn't be tolerated now.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he's been acting like this for years - it would explain some backroom staff stitching him up by leaking unaired footage.
