I've had a few dogs on leads lunge at me from the pavement as I've been passing on the road recently. So far I've seen them early and been ready for it, but there's always next time.....;)

Try speaking to them before the lunge or do something to distract that bit of brain that's wondering if you're prey - cough loudly or ring your bell

Yesterday on the sustrans route a dog ran straight in front after I had slowed right down. I heard the owner say: 'You idiot', but I think he was talking to the dog!

In the past I've had a few interactions with dogs and their owners and in most cases I've anticipated it, come to a stop and trackstand, I've laughed something and usually the owner laughs back sometimes apologising sometimes not but there's no problem. Occasionally however I've reacted the same way but have been accused of trying to kill their precious .
I have a colleague the other day who asked why I cycled on the road, he later iterated that he thought it should be compulsory for cyclists (which he is now through cycle scheme) to use the off road path like he does. Its 1.5 miles longer, often flooded, Dogs, broken glass, the occasional worse traps for cyclists (clothes lines tied across the path), etc. Now I remember why I don't use it often.

Wait for a really wet time, and offer to race him.... (if you really want to make a point, lace the path with glass and dog poo first...)

Still, I suppose at least he's on a bike...

And again today, except I was on skates at a gentle 12mph or so. No dodging on my part, rather than swerve the dog can bounce off my legs.

some people get a little confused by my refusal of using a cycle lane in one direction but gladly using it in the other! coventry has many subways that are shared use, however, to use some sections it would require cycling or walking on a pavement or the wrong way on segregated dual carriageway for 300 yards to get to it, if i continue on the correct side of the road, then turn right, i can join the path after a short stretch of rarely used but very wide pavement.

the other confusion comes when there's a shared path (formally a pavement) running alongside the road - i'm keeping up with traffic, the road is smoother, i don't have to stop for driveways nor stop to lift my bike up the kerb,

simple really ;)

One would have thought so.

But most people who never cycle on the roads, or cyclepaths, remain firm in their belief that all cyclepaths are better for cyclists and think that we prefer roads due to either suicidial or cross-awkward tendencies.
