One of the rules about giving stuff to charity shops is that you're not allowed to come home with more than you donated. I've just given an MTrax kid's MTB to my local charity -EnviroAbility of Ross on Wye - and been given this in return. The last thing I needed was another project, but I couldn't refuse this!

I love older bikes. Look how neat the cable clamp is on the rear derailleur.

All dismantled (apart from the headset, which is the next job: I'm hoping to get away with rebuilding it with new bearings). It's polished up nicely. But the question is, what to do with it? I can either rebuild it as a period correct restoration, or I can dig around in the bits box and find enough Shimano 10 speed stuff to restomod it. Thoughts?

As a lad, fitted two of these on my bike for my evening forays into the rural areas and STILL couldn't see a 'kin thing more than a metre ahead of me - !
Ahh, the 'good old days' of cycling - !

Yes, I remember commuting back from somewhere in deepest rural Shropshire at 4am with one of these on the front. It made zero difference whether it was on or not.

Oh, that's why the front light doesn't work. Although I seem to recall from using these back in the day that, if anything, it went darker when you switched them on.

If you just swap the batteries over I'm sure you'll get another few hours out of them

I'd build it back up as it was, but new cables, blocks, chain etc etc . That small chain ring as decent sized large rear cog means its going to be pretty useable on it current gearing, that's the beauty of "touring" vintage model.
The foam grips have to go though!

The advantage of building it up with more modern kit is that I use up some of the bits I have lying around and I end up with a very useable classic bike. The bits off this frame can go onto my old Mercian, currently running as a singlespeed but with a knackered back wheel. The disadvantage is that I already have, er, three restomodded old frames and don't really need another. But I also don't really need another classic tourer as I have one of those, too. I think I'll see how the mood takes me once I've rebuilt the hubs and headset and cleaned all the bits.
