Should I ever need to worry about cleats wearing out. Does their life depend more on the amount of walking I do than the cycling ?

Depends on what cleats you have.
SPD-L's and Look Keo's will wear out.
MTB SPD's - well let's just say they will probably outlast your shoes.

Have not worn out my keo cleats, but the other half managed to wear a set out in six weeks and she only rode for four of them, she was draging her shoe along when stopping, she has got the hang of it know.

Look keos wear out pretty quickly and stop being as responsive with the clipping in. They're gone when they unclip themselves or there's a play in the clip feel (as the plastic gets too thin to have a decent purchase on the pedal).

Walking on flat ground does not wear many spd-sl cleats out as the ground contact areas are not the same as the pedal contact areas..

i got SPD on my road shoe...i walk around with them on tarmac, cobbles and pavements...the black paint is gone (naturally) but the cleats are in good shape little signs of ware...i have had them for 6 months for my daily commute + a short stint of walking as it is 1 way system near work and go around it adds a good 5min to my journey so i walk it in 3 min instead.

My Crank Brothers almost but not quite SPD type cleats have covered well over 10000 miles and while they look a bit scratched and battered work just as well as the first day I used them.
