Cleat wear

Hi all

7 months into cycling and loving it. Mostly.

I switched to SPD in Feb and am getting used to them ok. Do the cleats wear out? How do I tell and what's the impact if I leave them too long? I check they are tight before I set out. Id hate to be left clipped in at the wrong moment.

Yes they do wear out once you realise your slipping out of your pedal - change

if you are talking about SPD-L cleats, then yes they do wear out.
If you are talking about MTB SPD's, then your shoes will wear out quicker then the cleats.

Definitely MTB SPD, not SPD-L.

My SPD cleats are four years old, worn and walked on for most of the day, five days a week. The are slightly more rounded than they were, but still get gripped by the pedal perfectly.

Ianrauk is right, they've been on three pairs of shoes and two sets of pedals!
