I just have javascript turned off except for trusted domains.

I'm not IT savvy so what is the benefit in doing that please? Is that the same as Colin having Flash turned off?
Does it keep the computer running quicker?

One reason I mainly do that is because of SQL injection which is basically a method of inserting malware onto another database-driven site. Often the "injected" code will be a call to some nefarious javascript routine hoseted elsewhere, that then installs it's mischief on your PC without your knowledge.

Recently a football supporters' club site was hit, however the noscript addon for firefox blocked it and protected my PC, and I knew what was happening because I noticed that javascript from another domain rather than the actual site was being blocked..googled the filename of the .js and it and it proved to be malicious

It also blocks doubleclick and the likes cutting down on tracking and ad-targetting

Other reasons are that it stops things being done automatically and gives me control over what runs and what doesn't. It "turns flash off" because of the javascript often used in the flash embedding

Since many ad servers use js rutines, it effectively blocks many ads too,

I really only understood a bit of that but did get the gist so thanks and I've just downloaded noscript.
I'm guessing it'll be ok to permanently allow scripts to run on here? It did make the drop down box for my profile go a bit peculiar when they were off.

In theory no. Cycle chat could get hacked and therefore allow for bad JavaScript to run. However, it's probably a bit more trustworthy than a lot of sites so you should be fine.

I turn Flash off by default because there are some sites that completely overdo it and you get bombarded by animated ads, the sound of buzzing insects, crap bouncing around the screen and so on. If I go to an interesting-looking site that needs it, I turn it on for that site.

I saw that too I learnt loads of Dutch from the site - confetti / blender / pan / (my favourite - and a bit odd in a Dutch shop) - rugbybal.

What can they all mean?

I disagree colin (partly). The "Flash" requirement is annoying - it wouldn't work on any computers at work.

Otherwise it made me like the shop and probably more likely to use it than less in the future, should I urgently need a Dutch Rugby Ball

It differentiates between TLDs too so (before the forum change when the site could be either .co.uk or .net) allowing cyclechat.co.uk and then visiting cyclechat.net and scripts would be blocked from on the .net domain.

Well it is a website. You can tell because you type or link the URL into an internet browser, and then it displays!

Good point. Although CC does allow uploads, so there wouldn't be a reason that a javascript file couldn't be uploaded and therefore allowed to run somehow.

As a web designer myself, I can see why someone has done that. It's not the worst way of using Flash. Flash has been around long enough now that most people have it. So compatability isn't a problem. If it boosts sales then why not?
